Careers & Pathways

All students are offered guidance in planning their education and future career direction under the 蜜桃传媒 Career Education Plan. All students are encouraged to request an individual interview with Careers Advisors: Ms Alana Wall and Mrs Rachael Purdie as and when required.

The Careers Centre is located downstairs in Block 2 and is full of course information from various course providers. There are a range of events throughout each year to inform students. One example is the annual Careers Road Show held early in Term 2 with over 30 providers coming to talk to students face to face to explain opportunities for further study and to answer questions. The Careers team aim to link classroom learning with what students can go onto once they leave school.

Our Careers staff are experts in assisting students with enrolment processes for courses, vocational educational training and apprenticeships.听 We have a high acceptance rate due to both the calibre of our students and the detailed support provided by our Careers Department.

Our goal is for students to leave Nayland with a smile . . . and a plan!

CREATE A CV/JOB SEEKING

Your CV is your personal marketing campaign - your chance to sell yourself to future employers, tell them who you are and the experience you hold.听 Focus on your strong points and emphasise your skills, abilities and work/volunteer history.

See below the CV workshop booklet link, providing you with ideas and examples on how to construct your CV.听 Template options for your CV and cover letter are also included in the booklet and you can download and save the word template to create your own.听 Be sure to amend your CV specifically for each individual vacancy you apply for.

GATEWAY

Gateway can be taken as a subject in Years 12 or 13 and can help to support transition into the workforce. 听This Programme delivers hands-on practical learning, that can lead to nationally recognised qualifications.听听

Set unit standards will be provided from Industry Training Organisations, relevant to the learners workplace. Possible outcomes are; apprenticeships, part-time, or fulltime employment, along with on-the-job training and developing work-ready skills.听

Employers have the opportunity to provide valuable work experience to students, supporting our community, along with the added bonus of assessing the possibility of a potential employee.听 If you are an employer and wish to know more about the gateway programme, please contact the Gateway Coordinator moira.raumati@nayland.school.nz听

WiE CAN - Women in Engineering Residential Programme

This is a 5 day/4 night programme that will immerse you in student life and experience the range of engineering subjects on offer at UC. 60 places available, must be a Year 12 female - (or identify as), 16 years old by 12 January 2025 and currently studying physics and mathematics. Food and accommodation is paid for. You must pay for transport to and from Christchurch.听 Apply online, applications close 28 August.

Te Paewai O Te Rangi - Victoria University On Campus Programme

This Scholarship is for Year 13 students of Maori descent, who are on track to achieving university entrance. Students must be able to to attend for the duration of the programme, Tuesday 20 August - Saturday 24 August.听 Applications close 8 July.听 Please register your interest at the careers centre.听 听

HANDS-ON AT OTAGO

Applications are now open until 8 August.听 Experience a week of university life on the Dunedin campus.听 This is for Y12 or 13 students in 2025. To learn more head online 听 You will find videos, info on costs and scholarships available. This is a great opportunity for Y11 and Y12 students, so check it out.

SCHOLARSHIPS & STUDYLINK

Each year a range of scholarships are offered through various providers.听 Some are specific to 蜜桃传媒 or for Nelson/Tasman school leavers.听 More details on these can be provided by the Careers Office.

TRADES ACADEMY AT NMIT AND WHENUA ITI听

Trades Academy students spend one day a week at NMIT campuses learning their chosen industry, or at Whenua Iti on a block outdoor residential course.听 All Trades Academy and Whenua Iti courses are free to students.

A gap year can involve working in New Zealand, or overseas, a student exchange, travelling, or a combination of all. Typically this is in the year before starting tertiary study, or an apprenticeship.

Gap years can help young people learn more about themselves, experience different cultures, explore career options and help decide on future plans.
