Basketball, Netball, Rugby, Gymnastics, Orienteering and Swimming have been the focus of our sports column this week, showcasing some great individual talent and team efforts.
Winter Tournament – Senior Girls Basketball
Our Senior Girls Placed 5th at the tournament in Dunedin. They qualified for nationals, the first time since 2011! The girls played outstandingly well, winning five games and losing three. Emilia Ainley was also a junior top points scorer.
Congratulations to all and thank you to Sam Jenkins, Michelle Ainley, and Brendan Crichton for all your support.
Winter Tournament – Senior Boys Basketball
Our boys placed 13th at the tournament in Dunedin. With over 40 teams competing the Senior Boys team has continued to grow. They picked up five wins and three losses. Ben Sheat has done a brilliant job getting this group of young men playing at a high level and being extremely competitive. Great support from Sam Berkett, Kazlo Evens, Nacey Guyton, and Brendan Crichton.
Nayland vs Nayland Old Boys Basketball
On Monday 16 September, ABC ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ Old Boys played against our ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ Senior A team for their annual showdown. We lost 73-78 in what was a great game. There was a huge turnout from the Old Boys, who started strong and managed to pull ahead of us.
Netball – Ayla Dewson & Abby Rangi
Congratulations to Ayla Dewson (Year 12) and Abby Rangi (Year 12) who were selected to attend the 2024 Netball Mainland advanced camp! Camp kicks off tomorrow, and we can’t wait to hear all about it on your return!
Rugby – Ajay Holdaway
Congratulations to Ajay Holdaway on receiving his 20 game cap for the Waimea Combined 1st XV in the last game of the season. Ajay is the first ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ student to receive a 20 game cap. Awesome achievement and a great way to finish a successful season.
Gymnastics – Ava Nicholson Smith
Ava Nicholson-Smith (Year 9 Student) had an amazing few days at the South Island Artistic Gymnastics Championships which took place over 7-8 September. Ava achieved outstanding results placing 1st overall. Congratulations Ava!
Orienteering – Micah Dunn
Congratulations to Micah Dunn (Year 11) – our orienteering superstar!
At the South Island Secondary School Orienteering Championships (a full two days of competition), Micah placed 2nd in his age group in the 2.7km sprint event at South Brighton and 2nd in the 4km long event in Bottle Lake Forest.
Micah is now preparing for a trip to Australia next month as he will be representing NZ in the Secondary Schools Trans-Tasman competition! Wishing you all the best for your next event!
Swimming – Brooke Swan
Brooke has been featured in the Nelson Weekly with an update on her journey to the tri-series swim meet in October next month. She won the U17 and U18 100m butterfly finals and then finished third in the senior division. You can read the full article below! Wishing you all the best in Hamilton!
